Description

  • Sir Peter Paul Rubens
  • Silenus holding grapes and crowned with vines
  • oil on canvas
  • 52cm by 40.5cm
flanked by two bacchanals Oil on canvas In a carved wood frame

Condition

The canvas has been relined, and the paint surface is clean. There are some areas of restoration in the darker tones which are visible to the naked eye. Ultra violet inspection reveals a layer of uneven varnish. Furthermore, one programme of restoration to minimise the the craquelure throughout the paint surface is apparent. Similarly there is a further, more recent programme of restoration to the drapery and the darker tones, and also to the upper, left hand, and right hand margins. Overall the painting is in stable condition. The work is offered in a carved and gilt wood frame.
