Condition

The canvas has been relined, and the paint surface is relatively clean. There is some minor retouching visible to the naked eye to the nose, lip and forehead of the sitter. There are also some linear marks in the upper and right-hand margins which stem from contact with the stretcher bars. Ultra violet inspection reveals a thin but uneven layer of varnish. There are some more minor areas of retouching to the forehead of the sitter, and in the neck and lower left side of his jacket. Overall the picture is in good condition. The work is offered in a carved gilt wood frame in very good condition.
