Catalogue Note

The arms and crest are those of Pakington, baronets of Westwood Park, Worcestershire, probably for Sir John Pakington, 4th Bt. (1671-1727) who succeeded to the title upon the death of his father in March 1688. He was educated at St. John’s College, Oxford, where he matriculated in October 1688; less than two years later, aged 19, he became M.P. for Worcestershire and so continued until his death in the same seat during eleven parliaments. Sir John was married twice, first in 1691 to Frances (d. ? 1696/97), daughter of Sir Henry Parker, 2nd Bt. of Honington, Warwickshire, and second in 1700 to Hester (d. 1715), daughter and sole heir of Sir Herbert Perrot of Haroldstone, Pembrokeshire.

A very similar silver flask with detachable beaker base, perhaps once this present example's companion, also Pierre Harache, London, 1696 and engraved with the same scratch weight but with later initials, appeared at Sotheby's, London, on 4 July 1989, lot 247.
