Persian manuscript on paper, 161 leaves plus 2 fly-leaves, 17 lines to the page, written in nasta’liq script in black ink, ruled in gold, red and blue, important words picked up in red, few diagrams, gold and polychrome illuminated frontispiece at the beginning of each text, in gilt-stamped binding with flap

Condition

In generally good condition, the stains and the margins are overall clean, minor notes throughout or ownership notes, minor smudges to the ink, stains, three folios loose at the end but complete, minor losses to the binding, as viewed.

Catalogue Note

The manuscript was endowed to an unnamed place by Zahir al-Din Muhammad Ibrahim, Minister of Azarbaijan, other noteworthy ownership notes are the impression of someone with the name Muqim or Muhammad Muqim dated 1081 AH (1670-71 AD) and the library seal of Mehdi Bayani.

The scribe 'Ayn 'Ali is recorded in Bayani as living in seventeenth century and other two manuscripts copied by him are known: a copy of the Divan by Hafiz, dated 1082 AH (Sotheby’s London, 21 November 1985, lot 421) and Rauzat al-safa dated 1051 AH (Sotheby’s London, 22 May 1986, lot 526).
