Arabic manuscript on paper, 49 leaves, 5 lines to the page written in fine nasta’liq in black ink within cloud bands against a hatched ground, verses marked by polychrome and gold pointed roundels, margins with Persian commentaries in black shikasteh and Persian translation in red ink, ruled in blue and gold, surah headings in white against a gold ground within a cartouche filled with foliated scrolls, brown morocco binding with cut-leather filigree work, with flap

Condition

In good overall condition, the margins with annotations in black and red nasta'liq, a seal impression on f.2a, water and other stains, but overall the calligraphy bold, the opening folio with water staining affecting in particular the bottom part, the illumination in good condition with only minor flaking, the binding with the front medallion damaged and missing approximately one/fourth of the filigree work, the back medallion missing, some minor loss to the filigree work on the flap, as viewed.

Catalogue Note

Sultan ‘Ali al-Mashhadi was a celebrated calligrapher working at the court of Sultan Husayn Mirza Bayqara in Timurid Herat whose works are dated between 1445 and 1516 (Bayani 1959, pp.101-03). He was the teacher of famous scribes such as Sultan Muhammad Nur, Sultan Muhammad Khandan and Muhammad Abrishami. He worked in Herat until the Sultan's death, after which he returned to his hometown Mashhad, dying in 1520 AD. 

A Safavid drawing with calligraphy by Sultan 'Ali al-Mashhadi was sold in these rooms, 8 October 2014, lot 67, whilst a bifolium from the Panj Ganj of Jami by the scribe was sold as part of The Stuart Cary Welch Collection, Part One, 6 April 2011, lot 104.
