Description

  • silver and silver gilt and steel, wood
the curved double-edged steel blade with raised medial ridge, with chiselled square graphic design at the forte, one side of hilt and scabbard finely decorated with silver and silver-gilt filigree design, the scabbard with suspension loop, reverse with two small loops

Condition

In general good condition, the blade with patches of oxidisation and associated discoloration as well as scratches, the hilt and scabbard rubbed with some resulting discoloration and oxidisation, minor dents associated with age and use, reverse of scabbard reveals some old restoration marks, two small cracks around loops on reverse (indicating these may have possibly been added slightly later), as viewed.

The hilt and scabbard of this jambiya are elaborately decorated with finely worked filigree designs, a technique that is particularly associated with the Jewish silversmiths working in Yemen and South Arabia.
