There are scattered creases to the cloth going horizontally, vertically and diagonally across the painting with associated losses to the pigments, particularly along the lower part of the painting (i.e. the inscription band and the rocks on the bottom of the painting), the central part and the upper part of the painting. The painting is very finely painted with finely painted gold detailing, the colours vibrant and far less yellow than the catalogue illustration suggests. The Chinese number 27 is inscribed in black ink on the lower right hand rim of the unpainted border of the cloth, hidden by the silk. On the back, a fine yellow silk textile is attached to the upper part of the cloth and loosely covering the back. The original gold brocaded red and blue silk textile of the mount is attached around the red-painted border of the painting. The painting and silk mount are loose and not attached to a board. The two inscriptions in gold Uchen script along the upper and lower painted borders of the painting may be translated as 'Homage to the 21-deity Vajramrita Mandala, which is the twenty-seventh Vajravali mandala', and 'The Vajravali Mandala was composed according to the measurements and so forth prescribed by Chankya Tulku Rimpoche and was offered out pure intention by the twelfth Prince Yintao'.
