Condition

The screen panels are made of wood and the carved design has been lacquered. The screen is separated in two parts, each comprising three joined panels. There are areas of restoration and re-lacquering to the brown ground and particularly to the sides of most panels. There are some cracks and splits to the lacquer scattered across the panels, a number of which have been filled in at a later point. There are minor losses and chips to the raised parts of the carved design and along the edges and rim of the design. There are carved recesses on the sides of each panel where hinges would have joined the screens. New hinges have been inserted. There are chips, flaking, lifts and losses to the gilding and to the pigments and some areas have been restored. The back is lacquered in a reddish colour and there are some vertical splits running from the entire panels from the top to the bottom which are visible. There are stains and some losses to the lacquer. Each panel is surrounded on the edges by a network of tiny holes indicating that fabric may have been nailed and removed.
