This work has been lined. The surface is clean and the colors remain vibrant. Under UV: The work is covered in an unevenly applied varnish. Areas of very finely applied retouching are visible underneath and around the soldier's boots; around the outline of his proper right arm, shoulder, face and helmet; above the left of his hat; and in the space between the top of his hat and the column. Pinpoint dots of scattered retouching are visible in the foreground underneath the figure and horse and at the extreme edges. There are a few white fluorescing pinpoints in the horse's chest.
