Catalogue Note

A great defender of Surrealism, and then later of Pop Art and Nouveau Réalisme, Alexandre Iolas, who founded his first gallery in New York in 1945 before opening a number of branches in Paris, Geneva, Zurich, Milan and Athens, was doubtless one of the most flamboyant dealers of the 20th century. At the beginning of the 1950s, whilst he was organising his first solo show of Andy Warhol’s work in the United States, Georges Mathieu painted Number 5, which was purchased by Alexandre Iolas and then given by him to the Museum of Modern in Art in New York a few years later.
