Catalogue Note

On a label affixed to the backing, Tom Lovell describes the scene depicted in The Flannel Shirt Flag: "In 1871 a small war party approached several wagons under escort by Col. R.I. Dodge and a detachment of infantry. Having learned that a white flag (in this case a “liberated” shirt) signal[ed] a desire for parlay, two warriors rode forward to meet with Dodge under this cover. A small tribute was paid and the wagons passed unharmed."
