Catalogue Note

In the present picture Cucuel illustrates southern Manhattan from a vantage point on Governor’s Island. At right is Castle Williams, a circular fortification on the northwest point of the island and part of a system of forts constructed in the early 19th century to protect New York City from naval attack. Other structures visible in the skyline include the Woolworth Building, the International Mercantile Marine Company and the Whitehall Building.
