Catalogue Note

In a letter to the Pioneer Art Museum dated 1959, the year he donated the present work, Austin Purves Jr. writes, “I used to write to Mr. Parrish a lot when I was a youngster because I loved his work and liked even more to get a reply from him now and then. When I was eleven or twelve or so I, according to report, nearly died of pneumonia and Parrish, bless him, when he heard about it sent me eighteen of his things to cheer me up. The effect was magic. This sketch was among them.”
