Catalogue Note

This painting depicts the Montgomery Ward Building in Chicago. Although much altered, it still stands on North Michigan Avenue and East Madison Street, directly across from today’s Millennium Park. The Montgomery Ward Building was designed by architect Richard E. Schmidt and completed in 1888. It was briefly the tallest building in Chicago.
