Condition
This work is in very good condition. The canvas is unlined and the tacking edges have been reinforced. There are two small repaired punctures near the lower right edge. Under UV: there are 2 dots of inpainting corresponding to the repairs and a small touchup in the left side of the man's neck.

The present work depicts Ethelinda Vanderbilt Allen and her fiancé James H. Ward, who were married the following year. Ethelinda's brother William Vanderbilt Sullivant Allen was an artist and one of Metcalf's close friends.
