Catalogue Note

As indicated on a plaque affixed to the frame, the present work was commissioned by the Mercantile Library Association of Boston on the recommendation of Edward Everett. Howorth modeled this portrait after John Trumbull’s likeness of Alexander Hamilton, a version of which is in the White House collection of fine arts.
