Recognized primarily for his droll caricatures of contemporary celebrities and cartoons for periodicals such as The New Yorker and the New York Evening Journal, Stengel is less known as a painter.  The present painting is a rare example for the artist and suggests the influence of the German Expressionists, particularly the work of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner.

SURFACE: in good condition UNDER ULTRA VIOLET: a repaired (horizontal, meandering) tear across the entirety of the work (barely shows to the naked eye); aside from this, a small cluster of pindots at lower left
