Description

- Up to Mischief
- signed N. Gysis. lower left
- oil on canvas
- 50 by 40cm., 19½ by 15½in.
Provenance
Purchased in Germany circa 1910 by the great grandparents of the present owner; thence by descent
Condition
The canvas has not been lined. There is a fine pattern of drying craquelure, notably visible in the upper half of the composition, with some minor associated spots of old paint loss. Pentimenti around the profile of the child's face are clearly visible to the naked eye.
Ultra-violet light reveals a layer of even varnish and some scattered spots of cosmetic retouching addressing the aforementioned paint losses, including an area of retouching in the upper right corner and some small spots in the lower right corner and in the red vest of the boy. However, retouchings are mainly in the background and the main composition appears to be virtually untouched.
Overall, this work is in good condition and ready to hang.
Presented in a simple dark wooden frame.
