Condition

Overall the condition of the marble is very good, with minor dirt and wear consistent with age. There is minor veining to the marble consistent with the material, including at the proper right side of the chest and upper abdomen. There is a small hole to the drapery at the front, below the proper right hand. There is some orange veining running particularly through the terrasse at the back. There are some minor inclusions, in particular to the drapery at the back. There is a small, partially filled hole to the drapery by the proper left leg. There has been an attempt to conceal some of the veins, in particular to the terrasse and drapery, by the proper left foot, and at the chest on the proper left side. There is a small inclusion to the nose.

Catalogue Note

This finely carved marble shows particular skill in the detailed carving of the flowers and the intricacies of the drapery. Represented in a gentle contrapposto pose, and with idealised face and hair, the figure is indebted to the Neoclassical style. However, a closer connection can be seen with Italian Romantic genre sculpture of the 19th century. Compare in particular to a figure of Autumn by Pasquale Romanelli (op. cit., fig. 1605).
