Condition

Overall the condition of the marble is very good, with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. The proper left hand appears to have been reattached; the joints are well-concealed. There is some light veining to the marble consistent with the material. There are a few small naturally occurring inclusions, including to the chest. There are some minor chips to the edges of the base and to one of the toes. There is one larger chip to the bottom edge of the base at the back.

Catalogue Note

This sensual depiction of Pandora differs from the more static Neoclassical representations often seen in the 19th century, such as John Gibson's version in the Victoria and Albert Museum (inv. no. A.3-1922). The complex vertical folds of drapery in the present marble highlight the skill of the sculptor. Compare the drapery of a Pandora by James Pradier, sold at Sotheby's London, 25 November 2009, lot 9.
