  • ivory and bronze, gilt patina, inlaid with a turquoise stone, on an onyx base

Condition

Overall the condition of the statuette is very good with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There is some yellowing to the ivory in areas. Both arms are carved separately, and joints are visible at the arm bands. There is also a slightly open but stable split at the proper right shoulder. The fillet held in the woman’s hand is slightly loose. There is some minor dark spotting to the gilt bronze. There are minor abrasions to the socle. There is a chip to the socle at the back.

Louis-Robert was the son of one of France's most prolific 19th century sculptors, Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse. A similar model was sold at Christie's London, 1 October 2002, lot 289.
