Condition

Overall, the condition of the plaster is good, with some dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There is minor flaking to the polychromy, in particular to the terrasse. There are a few larger losses to the polychromy, including to the proper right eyebrow, the nose and the chin. There are a few small losses to the plaster, including to the edges of the terrasse. The bust is cast in sections, and an original joint is visible to the proper right shoulder. There are a few small splashes of paint to the bust.

Catalogue Note

Iris Schweppe was a close friend of Howard. The use of polychromy creates a remarkably engaging portrait which, with the sitter's cropped, boyish hairstyle, and piercing blue eyes, strongly evokes the 1930s.
