Description

  • White Eagle Oil & Co.
  • Two Eagle Sculptures
  • cast iron

Condition

Overall in very good condition consistent with age. Each with light, scattered scuffs, nicks and scratches as well as natural inconsistencies and minor pitting to the iron as is common for this material. The patination has been refreshed. Some concentrated wear and rubbing to the patination of the beaks and head areas of the sculptures. The undersides of each eagle with more extensive scratches and the subsequent loss of black paint revealing the cast iron and some traces of rust. A stoic sculpture, this historical emblem recalls the era of American Industrialization and was originally designed to flank the entrance to each White Eagle Oil Company gas station in the 1910s and 1920s.

Catalogue Note

The White Eagle Oil Company was active in the 1910s and 1920s, having been established following the breakup of the Standard Oil Trust in 1911.  At the entrance to each station, a pair of these stoic eagles would typically be stationed on a plinth.  While the company was reabsorbed by Standard Oil in 1930, it's likely the eagles remained at their posts for several years thereafter.  Additionally created in cement and glass, these cast iron examples are large and impressive, reminiscent of the era of American Industrialization.
