Catalogue Note

Initially trained as a silversmith at Georg Jensen, Kay Bojesen established a lasting legacy as a children's toy designer in the second half of the 20th century.  The birth of his son, Otto, combined with a fond childhood memories of his artistic father, inspired Kay to venture away from silver and into the world of wooden toy production by the 1930s.  Elegantly simplistic and solidly functional, the wooden Monkey series was launched in 1951 following an alleged commission to create a children's coat rack.  He devised the monkey form to hook on a rack with long arms and subsequently extend down, in turn allowing a child to easily reach the monkey’s stylized foot to hang hats and scarves.  Generally found in seated heights of 7 3/4 , 11 and 18 in., the present lot is remarkable and rare due to its monumental dimensions of over two feet when in a seated position, and as such only twelve have been produced since 1990.
