In 2008, we broached one of our home bottles, decanting the wine off its heavy deposit two hours before drinking. It was still an amazing deep colour. Rich, intoxicating almost 'treacley' bouquet. Herbs, spices and caramelised orange. So sweet, rich and gentle on the palate. A terrific mocha finish. This is the sheer elegance of Lafite plus intensity - we raced through the bottle. Lafite 1961 remains something of an enigma as there is variation, but we really struck lucky here. In 2009, a bottle elsewhere was very scented, but lighter than our last bottle at home. Classy, sweet middle and finish. Elegant and delicate, gentle and tempting - but not the power this time. Serena Sutcliffe, MW
