Condition
Good condition overall with minor wear and surface dirt consistent with age and handling. Natural veining and inclusions to the marbles. A few chips to the drapery. An old restoration to Diana's chin and the tip of her nose. An old restoration to Athena's nose.

Catalogue Note
Le traitement détaillé de la cuirasse ainsi que celui des drapés à l’ampleur toute baroque s’inscrivent dans la tradition de la sculpture génoise de la fin du XVIIe et du début du XVIIIe siècle, dans l’entourage de Filippo Parodi (1630-1702). Après un voyage à Rome, où il travaillle comme assistant du Bernin, Parodi devient maître d'un grand atelier à Gênes, puis à Padoue, où seront formés un grand nombre de sculpteurs dont Andrea Brustolon, Giacomo Antonio Ponsonelli (1654-1735) ainsi que les frères Francesco et Bernardo Schiaffino (1678–1725). Nos marbres peuvent être rapprochés d'une importante paire de bustes allégoriques commandés à Parodi par le prince Liechtenstein à Vienne, dont la Vertu présente le même nez allongé aux arêtes franches, la bouche étroite aux lèvres charnues et les yeux grands ouverts aux paupières nettement dessinées. On retrouve ces mêmes caractéristiques dans son buste de Primavera ou Flore, conservé au museo Civico de Padoue, très proche de nos marbres.
