Catalogue Note
Emma Sandys was the daughter of an artist and a textile-worker and sister of Frederick Sandys. She is one of the most famous of the female Pre-Raphaelite artists and her best work demonstrates not only the influence of her brother but also his friend Rossetti. The present picture was painted in 1863 and echoes Rossetti’s voluptuous female portraits painted at that time.
