Catalogue Note
Broken-hearted by a Parisian dancer who abandoned Kelly in 1908, the artist left his Montmartre studio and at the suggestion of his friend Somerset Maughan he embarked for Burma. He had been inspired in Paris by his admiration for a photograph of Burmese dancing-girls and they were the subject of many of his pictures painted in Burma during his stay between November 1908 and April 1909. Ma Thein Kin modelled for Kelly on several occasions, including for Ma Thein in her Best Clothes.
