Catalogue Note

Stella takes its title from the solitary evening star in the sky behind the figure of the Pre-Raphaelite beauty garlanded by roses. It was painted for the Artist's War Fund of 1900, to raise money to support the troops in the first Boer War which had begun in 1899. It was the same fund to which Waterhouse contributed Destiny (Townley Hall Art Gallery, Burnley).
