Catalogue Note

One of the forgotten modernist masters of Egypt, Sotheby’s is honoured to be selling a rare work by Ahmed Morsi. The current work is a great example of Morsi’s oeuvre. The artist manipulates the human figure; represented through his characteristic anthropomorphic  triangular heads, rendering the viewer with an eerie sense of isolation and mysticism. Originally a poet, with a keen interest on the works of C.P Cavafy, a fellow Alexandrian, Morsi used his art to convey the unrequited search for the soul and spirituality of the 7000 years old Egyptian tradition. Examples of his works can be found internationally in museum collections and foundations across the world, such as Fundacion Banco Santander (Madrid), Santander, Madrid; Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, Doha, and the Sharjah Art Foundation (Sharjah).
