Catalogue Note

RARE PHOTOGRAPHS OF A.E. Nordenskiöld’s last expedition to Spitsbergen. The proposal was to establish a winter station as far north on Spitsbergen as possible in the summer of 1872, and conduct scientific observations during the winter, then in the following spring the plan was to travel as far north as possible over the polar ice with the help of dog sledges (this was later abandoned due to unfavourable ice conditions). The expedition produced valuable astronomical, geomagnetic and meteorological data, together with new knowledge about the northern coast of Spitsbergen.

The expedition vessel was the Polhem captained by Louis Palander, accompanied by the brig Gladan, and a steamer Onkel Adam. The expedition included Frans Reinhold Kjellman (1846-1907), August Wijkander (1849-1913), physician and photographer Axel Enwall (1844-1912) and Italian naval lieutenant Eugenio Parent (1845-1885). It is possible that this album belonged to Parent, which would explain the manuscript captions in Italian on the mounts.
