Catalogue Note

A FINE AND UNCOMMON SET of the three-volume French edition of the Atlas Novus published by Henricus Hondius.

The set collates as follows:

Volume 1. Northern and eastern Europe and Germany, 109 maps
Volume 2. France, Switzerland and the Netherlands, 98 maps
Volume 3. Spain, Italy, south eastern Europe, the continents of Africa, Asia and the Americas, 112 maps

In a highly competitive marketplace for atlases, the heirs of Jodocus Hondius (Joannes Janssonius and Henricus Hondius), produced ever-expanding and improved editions of the famous Mercator-Hondius atlas; sometimes they acted in partnership and sometimes not, to the extent that different editions could be published more or less simultaneously. These editions vary in the use of the older Hondius or newer Janssonius versions of about 25 maps. See following lot for Latin text edition by Janssonius.
