Catalogue Note

These fine images are contemporary darkroom prints of the images published by Aramco World magazine in their special Hajj issue of 1974. The purpose of this issue was to explain to American and European readers the importance of the Hajj to the Muslim world: "the editors chose and assigned several contributors whose religious, cultural, national and professional backgrounds tended to overcome the limitations that have so often affected other efforts to explain Islam to the West." The writers include Ismail Ibrahim Nawwab, Shaikh Muhammad Amin, and notably Michael Elin Jansen, an American woman who converted to Islam "she is one of very few Western women, and possibly the first American woman, to make and write about the Hajj".
