Catalogue Note

Giorgio Liberale and Wolfgang Meyerpeck first designed their large-format woodblocks for an edition of Mattioli’s Discorsi published in Prague in 1562. The blocks were re-used in subsequent editions, notably German and Latin editions printed in 1563 and 1565 respectively. Henri-Louis Duhamel de Monceau rediscovered the plates in the eighteenth century, and the paper labels pasted to the backs of the blocks are thought to be in his hand.
