Catalogue Note
"Reputedly the first to make the overland voyage eastward from Spain to the East Indies, Cubero was on tour from 1672 to 1679. When in Rome in 1671, he had been appointed Apostolic Preacher to Asia and the East Indies by the Congregation of the Propaganda" (F. Lach & Edwin J. van Kley, Asia in the making of Europe, vol.3, p.360). Cubero travelled from Europe through Hungary, Turkey, Russia, Persia, India, Malacca, China, the Philippines, Mexico, and back to Spain. The work was first published in Madrid in 1680 as Breve relación de la peregrinación.
His Segunda peregrinacion describes his travels through Europe, including Hungary and the threat of the Turks. He was appointed Apostolic Confessor to the army of the Holy Roman Emperor, serving the Emperor against the Turks in Hungary, and was present during the siege of Buda.
