  • A collection of approximately 143 architectural drawings of Mamluk buildings in Jerusalem and Cairo by Walls. [1960s and 1970s]
comprising 134 original drawings on drafting film, 2 originals on tracing paper, 6 dyeline paper prints and 1 dyeline on tracing paper, together with a number of printed books and offprints, including SIGNED COPIES of Walls' doctoral thesis and his Geometry and Architecture in Islamic Jerusalem

Catalogue Note

Archie Walls was Architect to the British School of Archaeology in Jerusalem, and later Cairo, when studying for his doctorate in Islamic architecture, concentrating on the works of the Mamluk Sultan Qaytbay (AH 872-901, 1468-1496 AD). Ninety of the drawings in the present lot record, analyse and illustrate the existing and reconstructed exterior and interior of Sultan Qaytbay's madrasa; 19 the decoration of a stone minbar presented to the Khanqah of Farag ibn Barquq by Sultan Qaytbay in 1482, and 16 of the tomb of Turkan Khatun (d.1352 Jerusalem).
