Catalogue Note

Although Dapper (1636-1689) is thought never to have left his native Holland, his publications became well known during his lifetime, and this work was later translated into French in 1703.

Most of the maps and views which in this copy are folding are also seen bound as double page plates. Nordenskiöld calls for a total of 64 maps and views including the 32 illustrated in the text, all but four of which (on three plates) are present in this copy. This varies very slightly from the 25 maps and views (plus five plates of coins) listed in the Instructions to the Binder.
