Catalogue Note

RARE PHOTOGRAPHS OF NEW CALEDONIA by Allan Hughan (1834-1883), the first professional photographer to establish a studio, including landscapes, Kanak people, and panoramas. Hughan came to New Caledonia by accident after a shipwrecked in 1870, and chose to stay and opened a photographic studio in Noumea in 1871, having apparently had previous experience as a photographer in Fiji. Hughan was appointed Government Photographer in 1872 and in early 1874 he went on a photographic expedition to the interior of New Caledonia. He photographed Queen Hortense and her entourage and the mission station at Vao in August and September 1876.
