Catalogue Note

The plates depict not only the natural scenery of the country, but art works and city views, as well as portraits of historic personages. A product of the movement to unite Switzerland's cantons as a single country, this work helped to define a national identity.

The work is often described as having 5 volumes. It was issued as 2 volumes of text, two volumes of plates and a fifth volume, Quétant’s Table analytique et raisonnée. All are present here despite the spines of this copy being lettered "Texte Tom.I [II]" and "Planche Tom.I". The second series of plates and Quétant’s Table analytique are bound at the end of text volume 2. In addition a prospectus and list of subscribers are bound in at end of volume 1.
