Catalogue Note

THE WARDINGTON COPY, RARE; THIS COPY NOT SEEN BY VAN DER KROGT, WHO LOCATES ONLY FIVE COPIES. This appendix, with fifty-nine new maps, was produced to update the 1628 French Mercator–Hondius atlas, so that it would be uniform with the expanded 1633 edition (see previous lot, and note). In this way, owners of the 1628 edition only had to purchase the Appendice rather than a whole new complete atlas. The new maps are very much a product of the intense rivalry between the houses of Blaeu and Hondius, started after Blaeu’s own Appendix of 1630.
