LARGE ENGRAVED WALL-MAP in 6 sheets joined (1210 x 1630mm.), with engraved side borders showing 18 vignettes and printed text in Spanish below, hand-coloured, some expert restoration
Literature
Betz, The Mapping of Africa 116
Catalogue Note
An impressive wall-map of Africa, flanked by eighteen finely-engraved vignette town plans or panoramas of principal cities including Alexandria, Algiers, Tunis, Oran, Cairo, Tripoli, Tangiers and Malta.
Wall-maps are particularly vulnerable to all manner of damage across the centuries and this is a fair example of the genre, and a rare survival of an eighteenth-century wall-map from the golden age of Dutch cartography. This example was evidently made to order for sale in the Spanish market.
