  • A Rare "Pebble" Panel from the Millbank Residence, Greenwich, Connecticut
  • leaded quartz pebbles, favrile glass

Condition

Overall very good condition. This panel (en suite with lot 402) was originally used as a cabinet door at the Millbank residence in Greenwich, Connecticut. When viewed in person, the pebbles present with a very slightly less red hue than in the catalogue illustration, with greater variation in the palette ranging from warm, subdued orange to light brown and tan to off-white and dark and pale greys. When viewed in person the chipped glass is a brighter and more saturated than in the catalogue illustration with vibrant greens and oranges. The quartz stones with light surface scratches, scattered hairline cracks (some possibly inherent), and light surface dirt consistent with age and gentle handling. Some of the stones are loose within their lead settings which is too be expected for works with Tiffany's "Pebble" motif and all are stable. Some of the leading joints with evidence of being stabilized by resoldering. The patina on the leading has been recently enhanced and is in good condition. The glass border tiles with light surface scratches and surface dirt to the recessed areas adjacent to the leading. Six of the border tiles have been replaced with period glass, which are a more forest green hue compared to the original olive green tiles. The panel is currently set within a temporary modern wood frame for stability. A superb and highly nuanced early design by Tiffany with historic provenance.
