Catalogue Note

Born Alexandre Farto in 1987, Portuguese artist Vhils destroys to create.
Vhils grew up in the industrialised suburbs near Lisbon and was influenced by the urban development in Portugal in the 1990s.
An avid experimentalist, Vhils has been developing his notion of the aesthetics of vandalism in a plurality of media – from his trademark oversized carved portraits to stencil painting, from drilling and controlled explosions to 3D modelling.
This striking form of visual poetry, showcased around the world in both indoor and outdoor settings, has been described as brutal and complex, yet imbued with a simplicity that speaks to the core of human emotions, expressing the struggle between the aspirations of the individual and the demanding, saturated urban environment.
Vhils’s gallery work includes portraits on found objects and use of man-made materials. After his 2012 exhibition Devoid, Vhils presented his last major collection at Lazarides during the show Dissonance in 2014. The new series of dynamic work expands on themes developed throughout his widely acclaimed 2014 solo exhibitions: Dissection, held at Lisbon's EDP Museum and Vestiges, showcased in Paris.
Vhils’s most recent carved outdoor portraits can be seen in Butterworth – Malaysia,Hong Kong,Catania in Italy and Kiev in Ukraine.
