Condition

The canvas has not been lined, and is slightly slack on its stretcher. Ultraviolet light reveals some minor signs of retouching, notably spots in the pictures on the right wall, and to the left of the lower framing edge. This painting is otherwise in good condition. Presented in a decorative gilt frame.

Catalogue Note

Dans cette toile, l’artiste d’origine russe Lucien Przepiorski dépeignit avec une extrême minutie l’ornementation disparue de la salle des Etats du Louvre. Depuis 1886, la riche salle abritait la peinture française du XIXe que le peintre reproduisit d’ailleurs avec soin. On reconnaît ainsi Les Illusions perdues de Charles Gleyre, des oeuvres d'Ary Scheffer, de David, d’Eugène Delacroix, de Deveria, de Prud'hon, ou encore d’Ingres.

En 1950, les stucs et dorures furent supprimés, la destination de la pièce changea et à défaut d’y voir des romantiques, on peut aujourd’hui y admirer la Joconde.
