Condition
The canvas is unlined and is secured onto a modern stretcher.
The ultraviolet light reveals a rather uneven varnish, making the surface difficult to read.
There appear to be old signs of retouching in the man’s forehead, and more recent strokes in his forehead, the chin and in the background.
There may be other areas of old retouching, for example in the man’s left shoulder, which do not fluoresce so clearly under UV light.
Under normal light, the work presents well overall and is ready to hang.
