Small folio (10 7/8 x 7 in.; 276 x 177 mm). Engraved title by William Hole, woodcut headpieces and initials; engraved title cropped at fore-edge and with new paper and double rule supplied, lacks the blank leaves *1 and Gg8, lacks unsigned sheet containing sonnets to Viscounts Cranborne and Rochester (known in only a few copies), bibliographical notes in ink on flyleaf. Brown morocco, spine gilt-lettered, marbled endpapers; joints and corners trifle rubbed.

First complete edition of one of the great books of English literature, compromising Books I–XXIV. The elaborate engraved title has the full-length figures of Achilles and Hector, and at the top a bust of Homer, supported on either side by reclining figures of Vulcan and Apollo.
