Catalogue Note

First edition. "All the learning of the age as well as its humour—and pedantry—are there" (PMM). The four subsequent lifetime editions of The Anatomy of Melancholy omitted "The Conculsion of the author to the Reader," which contains the only appearance of Burton's name in the first edition; the title-page credits the work to "Democritis junior."
