Catalogue Note

First edition, with "Patronage" on leaf A3v, line 19. A fine, bright copy internally. Begun as a series of letters to Locke's friend Edward Clarke, this work was immensely influential in its time, being published in at least fifty-three editions in the eighteenth century alone. The book is now considered to be one of the earliest expressions of the principles of modern developmental psychology.
