Folio (12 1/2 x 7 1/4 in.; 318 x 184 mm). Title-page a cancel, title within double-ruled border, errata on a2v, contemporary marginalia in ink (some copious) and later pencil notes; title-page browned with cropped and frayed fore-edge, marginal foxing, browning and staining (occasionally pronounced, particularly in front and back) some text browning, short tear cuttting into bottom two text lines (2G2v), leaves 3B3–4 detached. Modern polished black calf antique, crimson lettering piece.

Catalogue Note

First edition, (traditionally considered the second) issue, which has a cancel title without Holt's name in the imprint and with the inverted "SS" of "Essay" and a redistribution of the ornaments on the title-page. See previous lot for discussion of non-priority of issue.
