The Book of Homilies referred to in the 35th article of the Church of England originated at a convocation in 1542, in the reign of Henry VIII. It was published in 1547, early in the reign of Edward VI.
This official Prayer Book was suppressed during Queen Mary’s reign. When Elizabeth succeeded to the throne in 1559, among her first official acts she ordered the Prayer Book and Homilies to be reprinted. Later in her reign, a Second Book of Homilies was submitted along with the 39 articles to the convocation, and first printed in 1563.
